Photographing Earth Frequency Festival

Updated: Mar 5, 2019

Earth Frequency Festival is an all ages festival held at Ivory's Rock Conventions & Events every February and is four days of pure magic. From the EFF website: Earth Frequency Festival is a music, arts, lifestyle and environmental festival. based in South-East Queensland, Australia, with a strong focus on arts, education, healing and community spirit, While drawing from many cultural niches such as transformational festival, tribal gathering, doof and boutique festival, the aim of Earth Frequency Festival is to go beyond these traditional tags and to exist as a multi-faceted gathering focused broadly on creativity, community, connection, intention and inspiration.

As soon as you arrive you know you're in for a treat. The cicadas are singing and every face has a smile on it. The anticipation for four days of unabridged self-expression, genuine connection and fun are what keep drawing the 5000 strong crowd back year on year.

This year I attended my fourth Earth Frequency Festival and, for the first time, was welcomed into the festival's media team. I left Mackay to start the drive down to EFF with so much nervous energy bubbling around my being, but those nerves fell away as soon as I met the other event photographers and videographers, reconnected with old friends and exchanged smiles with strangers on the first afternoon.

Earth Frequency is so special for the community it creates. People of all ages, all ethnicities and all walks of life gather together because of our shared love of the bush, of music and the arts, creativity and connection. Beyond the music, there is so much to see and do. One of my fondest EFF memories is seeing Jupiter's moons through the telescopes that are often set up at night.

Attending EFF as part of the media team is definitely one of my new favourite memories, for the way it forced me to take in the bigger picture of the festival. For once I wasn't following friends to and from the campsite and dance floors. For the first time I was wondering solo for most of the weekend, drifting between the marketplace, stages, hangout nooks and the family, cognitive and kinetic realms.

It really is hard to put into words how beautiful Earth Frequency is. Every year I have come away from the festival feeling rejuvenated and inspired and having learned something about myself from which to grow. Every year, come the closing ceremony on Monday afternoon, it's so hard to concede to having to return home the following day.

But with every year EFF builds a connection with the local community - by donating portions of ticket sales to local organisations and schools, by inviting the local Lions club to sell food, drinks and ice at the festival and by offering community members the opportunity to come and experience the festival for themselves - EFF put down strong roots at Ivory's Rock and ensure that the festival will have a home for years to come.

Best Mackay photographer

Earth Frequency Festival holds such a special place in my heart and I'm certain that if you enjoy the outdoors, meeting new people, dancing, laughing and learning then, should you attend, it's bound to hold a special place in yours too.
